2014 Monmouth-Independence First Artist Award
We are excited to announce this year’s 2014 Monmouth-Independence First Artist Award recipients Ron and Marilyn Wynn.
Please join Central High School Performing Arts Booster Club April 12, 2014, at 7:00 PM for a concert to celebrate “A Musical Life—From Beethoven to Broadway” as we honor the lives of these two exceptional music educators and artists.
The concert will bring together a wide variety of music featuring: current Western Oregon University faculty; Wynn Music Scholarship recipients; Willamette Master Chorus members; Monmouth Elementary School children’s choir; and other talent from our community.
Ronald and Marilyn Wynn made many memorable contributions to the arts in the mid-Willamette Valley. For over 30 years Ron taught music at then Oregon College of Education and Marilyn at elementary schools throughout district 13-J. Their love of music inspired and enriched the lives of thousands of students.
Ronald and Marilyn moved to Monmouth in 1969. Ron acted in and directed many popular musicals, sang in several operas and performed onstage at Pentacle Theatre after he retired. For the last eleven years of his career he was the Chairman of the Fine Arts Department at (now) Western Oregon University. Throughout his life, Ronald was a vociferous advocate for arts.
Marilyn organized and directed many elementary school choir concerts and worked tirelessly to improve and incorporate music education into primary school curriculums. For many years Marilyn was the organist at St.Hilda’s Episcopal Church in Monmouth.
Ronald and Marilyn lived their love of music through teaching, performance, and boundless enthusiasm. Ron and Marilyn both died in 2013. For everyone they touched, students, colleagues, family, and friends, their lives are a testament to the timeless joy of living “A Musical Life.”
