The City is pleased to announce a new partnership with Polk HALO, Habitat for Humanity and Job Growers which will revive the sidewalk repair program from 2009.
We’ll be pulling together a crew of local youth who are “basic skills deficient” who will do sidewalk repair and minor home repair projects (siding repair, replacing railings, building wheelchair ramps, etc.) for low income residents. They’ll also be participating in educational programs, skills certifications and tours of construction and industrial sites. We’re looking for potential work sites.
The partnership with Habitat means that the program will only be open to people who meet the following criteria:
• Home is homeowners primary residence(no rentals)
• Home must be at least 5 years old
• Earn 20-80% of area median income
• Current on homeowner’s insurance
• Project must be minor exterior repairs(painting, ramp construction, sidewalks, etc.)
• Family must be willing to partner with Habitat for Humanity
The property owners will have to pay for the cost of materials for whatever repairs are done, which would be substantially less than it would cost to hire a contractor.
Interested property owners should contact Lindsey at Habitat for Humanity 503-364-6642 abwk [at] salemhabitat [dot] org We will take new sites on a rolling basis until we build up a big enough project list and then will suspend new applications until we’re sure we can get to everything.
Please pass this information on to anyone who might be interested in the program. Please also forward it to anyone or any organization who might be connected to people that could use this program. For now, the sites will be only in Independence. The program will start January 2nd and will run through June.
We're thrilled to be re-starting this great program. Our local youth get solid job skills, property owners get improvements at a price they can afford, and our community will reap the benefits of better-maintained sidewalks and houses, and a better-trained workforce . Please spread the word so we can maximize the potential benefit of this program.
