Billy’s Story – Veterans Day

As we venerate the heroes on Veteran's Day who selflessly served our country, the City of Independence sought to highlight our community by sharing one of their stories. Billy Whisenant is a retired Vietnam War veteran who served in the Marine Corps during the Tet Offensive and was later discharged as a Sergeant.

Paul Reiter Recognized with Historic Preservation Award

The house at 360 S 3rd Street has a history in Independence that goes back almost 100 years. Built by local banker Ira Mix in 1923 after his marriage to Marie Powell, the house has since changed hands over the years and now finds itself in possession of local home improvement aficionado Paul Reiter. Paul bought the home almost 20 years ago and let it lay dormant as he worked on developing other projects throughout Independence, such as the Pink House Cafe. Once Paul discovered it was time to settle down, he finally decided to remaster the house he now calls his "retirement home."

Independence Police Department Stands for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

In observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, you may see our officers wearing pink IPD patches to show their support for everyone affected by breast cancer. We encourage everyone to show their support this month by wearing pink and honoring the heroes who have fought and continue to fight this disease. We stand with you this month and every month.

Tricks and Treats Event Comes to Downtown Independence

Be part of the magic and join us on October 31, 2022, in downtown Independence 3 PM -5 PM for our Downtown Tricks and Treats event! Stop by any participating business to receive your treats, and don’t forget to check out our special entertainers performing all sorts of tricks downtown. Kids will get the opportunity to see a magician, a balloon twister, a singing clown duo who ride tall bikes, a contact juggler, a stilt walker, and more! Additionally, the Independence Public Library will be hosting a make-your-own Halloween bag for kids.
