Do you know how to approach a mid-block crosswalk?
Currently, there are three temporary mid-block crossings on Monmouth Street. These mid-block crossings or safety islands are intended to create an opportunity for a two-stage pedestrian crossing, helping to improve pedestrian safety while keeping traffic moving smoothly.
Here’s how you should approach the temporary midblock crossings when you are driving:
• If a pedestrian is on your side of the street or waiting in the median to cross to your side, you must stop and allow them to cross fully.
• If a pedestrian is on the opposite side of the street or not waiting to cross to your side, you may proceed with caution.
•If a crossing guard is present, you must follow the crossing guard’s directions. If the guard stops traffic for pedestrians, all lanes must come to a complete stop.
The temporary crossings will be in place for about a month while the city and the Oregon Department of Transportation evaluate their effectiveness. Lessons learned from the evaluation will guide future improvements and help secure potential grant funding.
To help us learn what individuals think of the crossings, please share your thoughts about the project so far. What has worked and, what hasn’t? Your feedback is important and will be included in the final assessment, helping shape decisions about the final project’s final decisions. You can email us at midblock@ci.independence.or.us with your ideas.
