Last week, a community listening session was held at the Monmouth Senior Community Center to help capture the voices of our senior-age residents about the livability of Independence and Monmouth. This is part of an initiative to pursue an AARP Age-Friendly Community designation for Monmouth and Independence, which would help create opportunities for residents of all ages to participate in community life. This first session in a three-part series was about Communication & Information, and Access to Healthcare.
Attendees admitted they receive most of their information from both city’s respective newsletters and social media, prompting conversations about accessibility. Additionally, the need for transportation to and from medical appointments was discussed, with many residents stating that their specialists reside outside of Polk County.
The cities of Independence and Monmouth look forward to hosting more senior community forums in the future and making our community more welcoming for everyone.
