The Independence Police Department will conduct high visibility traffic patrol for the remainder of December 2023, into January 2024, to discourage motorists from being under the influence of alcohol and drugs. This is in partnership with the Oregon Impact and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, intending to reduce the number of Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants (DUII) related motor vehicle deaths and injuries.

Last year, Independence had 19 DUII-related arrests. The Independence Police Department implores motorists to never get behind the wheel while impaired. When in doubt, err on the side of caution and find another way to get to your destination, such as calling for a ride or using public transportation.

The Independence Police Department is committed to ensuring the safety of everyone on and off the road in our community. In 2024, we will continue to increase traffic patrol, focusing on speed, safety belt usage, and distracted driving.
