The City Recorder is the local official who administers democratic processes such as elections, access to city records and all legislative actions, ensuring transparency to the public. The Recorder acts as a compliance officer for federal, state and local statutes, including Oregon Public Meetings Law, Oregon Public Records Law, Oregon Ethics Laws and Oregon and local elections laws. The City Recorder manages public information inquiries and provides support to the City Council and other commissions and committees of the City.
Karin Johnson, MMC has served as the City Recorder for the City of Independence since May, 2000. Prior to coming to Independence, she served as City Recorder/Treasurer for the City of Amity for nearly 13 years, and worked as an office manager/bookkeeper in the private sector. Ms. Johnson has been an active member of the Oregon Association of Municipal Recorders (OAMR) since 2000, and was elected an officer in 2004, serving as President in 2010-11. In March 2009, Ms. Johnson achieved the Master Municipal Clerk designation from the International Institute of Municipal Clerks.
