The Independence Police Department is sharing a sample of the calls for service each month to inform and educate community members on the work we do.
JULY 2024
In July, officers engaged in 909 activities, including 41 Arrests (Adults and juveniles), 24 check welfares, 19 domestic disturbances, 8 hit-and-run Crashes, 19 emotional health calls, and 40 Suspicious Activity / Person / Vehicle calls.
- Officers responded to a hit-and-run accident at B and Main St. A description of the suspect vehicle was obtained, and a second officer stopped the car. Field sobriety tests were administered, which the driver failed and was taken into custody. The driver blew a .21% BAC and was arrested for DUII and Failure to Perform Duties of a Driver.
- Officers were involved in a pursuit that headed into Independence on Highway 51. The vehicle crashed and the driver ran away on foot. Two passengers were detained and the driver was detained shortly after. While being transported to jail, one of the passengers confessed to a burglary, as well as an assault III they had been involved in. The stolen items were located in the crashed vehicle.
- Officers responded to a report of a large fight in progress with the mention of weapons. When officers arrived, everyone had dispersed and there were no victims of crimes.
- An officer was parked near the 7-Eleven and heard screaming and yelling. The officer drove into the parking lot and noticed two women, with one attempting to calm the other. One of the women was intoxicated and began following the officer around the parking lot. She had a water bottle in her hand and eventually struck the officer in the abdomen with the water bottle. The woman was subsequently arrested for Harassment.
- A McDonald’s employee found a baggie with meth inside. Officers seized the drugs to destroy.
- A man bit off a large chunk of another man’s ear when he alleged he was being assaulted with energy weapons. The victim said the suspect almost swallowed the large chunk of his ear. The man was arrested on Assault 2 and Harassment,
- Officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle with no plates. The driver had a warrant and was subsequently arrested for it, as well as a Probation Violation.
- Two men placed a skimming device over a debit/credit card reader at 7-Eleven (see photo). The second suspect distracted the employee with a lottery purchase. The suspects parked nearby and walked over to the store.
- Officers responded to shots fired during a domestic dispute. They arrested a woman on Attempt Murder 2, Unlawful Use of a Weapon,
Endangering Another Person, and Menacing. - Officers received reports of two shots fired near Picture St. A man was contacted and said his vehicle was likely backfiring. Officers learned the man had a Parole Violation Warrant and attempted to arrest him. The man resisted four officers as they worked to detain him. The man was lodged at the Polk County Jail.
